Partly Facetious: 'if wishes were horses...'
"The President has categorically stated that all dams will be built."
"You know we need the dams for electricity and for irrigation..."
"I am not questioning our need, I am questioning other related facts."
"Like what?"
"Like how long does he intend to stay in power?"
"Where does that come in?"
"Well some of the planned dams don't have a national consensus so if he is not there then the likelihood of..."
"But wouldn't his successors have the same concern about electricity and irrigation as he has?"
"Right, but if you are elected then you have to go by the wishes of the majority."
"Bush didn't."
"Bush did, but now that majority has turned into a minority - public opinion does change."
"His Poodle didn't either."
"His Poodle has had to leave office before he wants to."
"Alright, so I guess Musharraf will have to be politically active as the President and COAS for him to keep this pledge about building all the dams."
"Absolutely. And that means he is to stay in power for ten to fifteen years."
"It will take that long?"
"At least, if there are no delays."
"How old is he now?"
"I am not sure - 64 or so."
"That would take him to around 80."
"Right."
"So that's quite awhile."
"Indeed - does it seem likely that he will stay that long?"
"I am not sure. I do know that no one, not even a military dictator has been in power for that long in this country. Some have had to bow down to politics, others to God's will."
"But if we start the projects during his lifetime then maybe..."
"Projects have been stalled once started because politicians changed."
"Maybe his successors, the Chosen One, and the Chaudhrys will complete his work."
"If wishes were horses..."
"I guess it would be for BB and Nawaz Sharif."
"Indeed."
"Ironical that! His proclaimed worst enemies will be the ones who determine his legacy."
"That's the case in any system of government, including democracy, new or old."
